NEWS FLASH: Your vagina isn’t meant to smell like rainbows and sunshine
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let’s just be candid here for a second: the vagina is a muscular body cavity
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It secretes things, it bleeds, it orgasms, it brings life into the world – it does many magical things, but it does not smell like a yankee candle 🤷♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
AND IT ISN’T SUPPOSED TO
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So when we use scented douches or other scented products to “eliminate vaginal odor”, we’re messing up the whooooole dynamic of things.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The vagina is pretty particular and has its own microbiome made up of bajillions of microbes 🦠
While there’s not very much research on the function of the vaginal microbiome, we do know that when balance is thrown off in this area, it can lead to yeast infections or BV, which can be very serious and lead to bigger vaginal health issues.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Things that can impact this microbiome include scented washes/ douches/ wipes. The vagina is self-cleaning and doesn’t need our help keeping things tidy in there!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the vagina isn’t mean to smell like your favorite scented dish soap, it isn’t meant to have an offensive odor either. If you’re noticing a “fishy” smell or a “bad” odor, then that is a sign to see your doc and get tested for yeast, BV, and an STI/ STD asap queen. No shame, we just need to keep our vaginas healthy and happy 👏🏼
