When a client said this on a call, I cackled. We were talking about vaginal pH and how she can tell when something is off based on her smell. Do you smell your underwear?
There’s 2 major things that can tell you a lot about vaginal health:
I’m going to be very candid here: your vagina isn’t supposed to smell like a nice summer breeze. It is still a damp cavity into your body, despite the major sx factors.
That doesn’t make it gross. It is still sxy and fun. But when you release the pressure to smell like cherries and pineapple all the time, it makes pleasure a lot more… well, pleasureful.
In fact, products designed to alter your taste and smell, can actually do more harm than good. They disturb the vaginal microbiome and can make you more susceptible to infections and diseases.
So let’s talk about what odors are normal and which odors may be a red flag!
What’s normal:
✨ Sour – A vagina’s natural pH is between 3.8 and 4.5, so if you find that it smells slightly acidic, you’re right on track.
✨ Metal – Blood smells a bit like metal or copper, you may find this is a smell you have around your period. (If you’re having it at other times of the month, it may be a good idea to consult your doctor to make sure you aren’t having any abnormal bleeding).
✨ Sweet – Depending on the bacterial balance in your vagina, you may sometimes have an slightly sweet smell
When to see a doc for a swab and/ or blood test:
🚩 Fishy – This can be the symptom of a few different infections or bacterial imbalances including yeast, BV, or STD’s. If things smell like a fish market down there, don’t be freaked out, but make an appointment with your doc to get tested!
🚩 Chemical – sometimes this odor can be normal as an effect of urine! But it can also be related to bacterial vaginosis.
Is this something you need help navigating? No shame gal! I offer one-time calls for topics like this! Shoot me a message and let’s plan a time to chat 💌
