I got asked this question on the FAM Webinar a few weeks ago and I’m SO glad they asked! So here’s the deets on getting pregnant from precum…
The point of precum is to provide lubrication (how considerate!) and change the pH of the vagina to be a safe place for sperm.
There’s no semen naturally occurring in precum! So while we cannot get pregnant from precum itself, there is still a risk of sperm being present in some precum.
So let’s talk about the best methods of protection:
Sperm can still ride in on precum and so can STI’s —I recommend using a barrier method and/or being aware of potential risk, and tracking your cycle using FAM >> Practicing FAM Transformed My Life
If there is semen in the penis from a previous ejaculation that was not cleaned out—then there could also be a risk of getting pregnant (of course we’d have to be in the ovulation window as well). So if you’re having back-to-back sessions: take a break, wash things off, pee, and potentially use a barrier method if you’re not comfortable with the risk!
There are obviously other risks for pregnancy while going unprotected such as if your partner doesn’t pull out in time when using the withdrawal method, having sex during the ovulation window, etc.
The point of this is not to say that there can’t be sperm in precum—but to educate around the purpose of precum. While precum can transport sperm, it does not naturally contain it—therefore we cannot get pregnant just because precum is present.
