Do you experience cramps around ovulation? This is actually known as mittelschmerz and it is an abdominal pain associated with ovulation. A not-so-fun fact is: We don’t know why this happens!
As we approach ovulation, we have follicles that are developing into eggs. Each follicle is held in a sac and once the follicle reaches maturity, the sac ruptures and releases the follicle.
One theory of the cause of ovulation is the sensation of the sac rupturing and fluid being released
Another is that it is the follicle swells and presses against the wall of the ovaries
Don’t be afraid to take an NSAID if needed/ safe for you to do so!
Mittelschmerz may be different for everyone! Some people may notice this as a twinge while others may experience intense pain, some people may never feel this while others may have this with each cycle.
TOP TIP: If you notice pain throughout your cycle, make sure you’re tracking when it happens along with the intensity of the pain and what works best for helping the pain subside. This is important info for yourself to have and to share with healthcare providers!
