What Is Hypothalamic Amenorrhea?
Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) is a disorder in menstruators that means chronic anovulatory cycles (and often looks like a totally missing period)
Reminder: anovulatory cycles/ anovulation means that ovulation is not occurring.
The hypothalamus is on the undersurface of the brain and it normally produces GnRH. GnRH is responsible for signaling the production of hormones that are necessary for ovulation to occur.
When we have HA, the hypothalamus is no longer producing GnRH.
HA can sometimes be confused with PCOS because on the surface because both can look like skipped ovulations and missing periods, but they have very different root causes!
Common causes of Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA):
