Are you anxious or are your hormones just out of whack? A totally underrated symptom of hormone imbalance? Anxiety. Here are a few really important things you should know about mental health and hormone imbalance.
🧠 FUN FACT: Feelings of anxiety may decrease or go away completely when we have healthy levels of progesterone in the system.
While one of progesterone’s main jobs is to support a healthy pregnancy, it also does some other really crucial shit 👇🏼
For example, it balances estrogen.
While estrogen has lots of good jobs, too much estrogen can be harmful to the body – possibly leading to heavy periods, hormone imbalance, breast cancer, PMS, sadness, feelings of anxiety, and more.
Progesterone #werks to counteract all of that 👏🏼
It reduces inflammation, helps build muscle, protects our bones, promotes sleep, and calms the nervous system.
🔮✨ But here’s where the real magic happens: progesterone converts to a neurosteroid called allopregnanolone.
Allogpregnanolone helps support our brain health and basically works as an anti-depressant.
Low levels of alloprgnanolone have been linked to anxiety, PMDD, depression, and postpartum depression‼️
You can think of progesterone as this calming, mood-enhancing fabulous little hormone, and without enough of it, we can really feel the effects.
🥚 So how do we make sure we get more progesterone? Well, the body produces progesterone as a result of a healthy ovulation.
Things that can lower progesterone production and/ or prevent ovulation include under-eating, overactivity, emotional stress, unaddressed food sensitivities, hormonal birth control, and more.
When we’re on hormonal birth control, (except with the hormonal IUD) we aren’t ovulating and we aren’t getting progesterone. Progestin, the synthetic form of progesterone in HBC acts NOTHING like our natural progesterone.
Mental health is not something I take lightly and there are so many aspects that go into supporting our mental health, but hormones play a BIG role in our moods and emotional wellbeing + we dig into this aspect of it inside of Period Bootcamp.
