Let’s chat about how seasonal changes impact your menstrual cycle. In this blog post, we’re diving into the impact of seasonal shifts on your cycle and uncovering practical tips to maintain happy hormones and support your cycle during seasonal changes!
Along with the warmer temps and blooming flowers, did you know that this season can also f*ck with our menstrual cycles? If you have noticed that your menstrual cycle over the last month or two is shorter than usual, the spring season may be the culprit!
So… why exactly is my cycle affected by transitioning seasons? It turns out that a range of factors influenced by seasonal changes can affect our bodies and hormones. From changes in temperature and humidity to variations in barometric pressure and sunlight exposure, these external elements can impact our bodies and hormones.
In short: An increase in sun exposure, longer days, and warmer temperatures in the spring can cause a spike in FSH, which encourage ovulation and may result in changes to your cycle. Additionally, seasonal allergies may cause stress and inflammation in the body, which can also affect our menstrual cycle.
I get a lot of really panicked DM’s from people with periods who are experiencing an “off” cycle and worried it means that their hormones are totally out of balance
And I’m going to save you a lot of stress here –
⭐️ The cycle you’re having right now is a combination of things that happened over the past 3 months (#science) so if you’re a bit later this month, or if you’ve got heavier cramps than normal, or if you’re more fatigued than usual – that doesn’t mean your health has gone to shit!
More than likely, this is just an indicator that we’ve been under more stress than usual and our body is reacting to that.
Okay, so WHEN is the time to worry about cycle changes?
I generally don’t worry about these kinds of changes unless they occur for 2-3+ cycles (usually consecutively, but not always). For example, if each cycle gets longer and longer or if all of a sudden each cycle comes with intense pain – then we may want to explore creating some balance and addressing the root causes.
Remember, babes, it’s important to listen to your body and reach out to a healthcare pro if you notice any major changes in your menstrual cycle that don’t feel right. ✨
