Here are the facts about your menstrual phase: It is the first phase of your cycle, it typically lasts 2-7 days, and you probably think that it is supposed to suck, right? Let’s talk about the New Moon Phase
I’d love to bust that myth – Your period doesn’t have to suck at all! But the first step to your period not sucking, is understanding what’s happening during this phase and what a healthy period looks like.
What’s happening:
🌑 Ideally if you had a healthy ovulation, then you‘ll have a healthy period that month as well (bleeding does not always mean you ovulated though!)
🌑 Tissue lining is being shed
🌑 Progesterone and estrogen levels will start to drop resulting in moodiness, feeling tired, headaches, or body aches. When your hormones are balanced, you can still feel these symptoms, but they’ll likely be less extreme!
What a healthy period looks like:
🌑 Occurs every 21-35 days
🌑 Mostly liquid, not many clots and clots should typically be no larger than a dime
🌑 Mild cramping is normal, as your uterus is contracting to shed the lining
How to best support your body during menstruation?
🌑 Relax – reduce exercise if possible especially during the first 2 days
🌑 Chamomile tea to help soothe pain
🌑 Avoid sugary foods, alcohol, and caffeine – can increase flow, imbalance hormones, and affect blood pressure
🌑 Use organic/ unbleached period products
🌑 Heat – take a bath or use a heating pad
🌑 Seed cycling! (more on this to come)
If you’re having irregular cycles or uncomfortable symptoms, don’t panic! Your cycle is a way that your body communicates your health to you, so this is just letting you know you might have some things to work on.
This info may not apply to those on hormonal birth control
NOTE: The typical menstrual cycle lasts around 21-35 days and each lunar cycle is around 29.5 days so often times you’ll see info about how your period should be synced up to the moon, but there’s no proven benefits to having a cycle synced up to the moon – its just a fun association with some historical significance/ beliefs and good af energy.
