There’s no perfect timeline for the process of breaking up with hormonal birth control (HBC) BUT there are a few tips that may be helpful! Here’s how to determine the right time to come off HBC:
There’s no perfect timeline for the process of breaking up with hormonal birth control (HBC) BUT there are a few tips that may be helpful!
1️⃣ When to start prepping to ditch HBC? (Can I quit cold turkey?)
I don’t recommend quitting HBC cold turkey if you have control over the timeframe. For the easiest transition off, in my experience it is most effective to prep the body for 2-3 months prior to ditching HBC. This means supporting gut health, encouraging healthy detox, & taking care of hormone health to support the body for when we do come off!
But for those who didn’t have control over the timeframe or are finding this AFTER they came off – that doesn’t mean it is too late! It may not be *as* seamless of a transition (simply because it is usually easier to get ahead of any post-HBC symptoms) but you can do any of these things effectively even a year or more off HBC!
2️⃣ How long do I need to work on my hormones after?
My ultimate goal is to teach my clients to live a hormone-healthy lifestyle. There are a few supplements/ habits specific to the process of coming off of HBC, and I like to see those implemented for 3-6 months post-HBC (+ the 2-3 months prior to).
But the good news is – outside of a few supplements and gut-healing habits, most of these things are going to be habits that are normal to a hormone-healthy lifestyle. For example, eating complete meals!
3️⃣ When can I start trying to conceive (TTC)?
If you have the time to plan – After 3-6 months of post-HBC is a good time to start TTC. We ideally will take time to rebalance the hormones and support the gut after HBC before TTC because a compromised gut, nutrient deficiencies, and inflammation (all of which can be caused by HBC) can impact the baby’s development and mama’s health.
