Did you know that the Hormonal IUD has been shown to negatively impact mental health? Yup. The hormonal IUD affects your mental health and leads to increased cases of depression – possibly including you.
Progestin-only methods of birth control, like the hormonal IUD, have been shown to have a higher risk of mental health issues. Progestin is a synthetic hormone that is found in many forms of hormonal birth control that may alter brain chemistry, increase inflammation, alter gut health, and cause nutrient deficiencies.
Some studies suggest that a hormonal IUD specifically can contribute to symptoms of depression. Specifically, a study done in 2016 showed that the hormonal IUD nearly tripled the number of depression diagnoses and antidepressant use.
Although you may not realize it, the hormonal IUD affects your mental health. Remaining on hormonal IUD can cause lasting mental effects that may need to be treated with anti-depressants.
