“Can I balance my hormones while on hormonal birth control (HBC)?”
This is a common question I get and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, that’s not something we can do! (The exception to this: Hormonal IUD)
Most forms of HBC work by shutting down ovulation (except for the hormonal IUD), and this causes a big disconnect between the brain and the ovaries.
If you picture ovulation and our cycle is controlled by a switchboard and a bunch of buttons and levers β when we add HBC to the system all of the switches, levers, and buttons are turned to the off position.
Hormonal birth control essentially turns “off” our natural hormone production and flow with the intention of preventing pregnancy from occurring – so there’s nothing to “work on” or “balance.”
If you’re wanting to work on your hormone health, this unfortunately isn’t something that can happen while on hormonal birth control.
So, what CAN we do to help our bodies while on hormonal birth control? It is important to know that hormonal birth control can work against us on things like gut health and how we absorb nutrients, so I can’t guarantee any tips that will alleviate the symptoms you may experience on hormonal birth control but three things that I’d focus on no matter what are:
