Are you scared of what will happen if you ditch or try breaking up with HBC? Let’s talk about 5 things that may happen when you come off of hormonal birth control & how to avoid them!
When coming off of HBC, there are a few things that may happen.
1. Your cycle may be MIA for a few months
This is a really common symptom and can be normal as your body adjusts.
Ideally, if we prep the body before coming off and work on hormone support this won’t happen!
2. Pre-HBC symptoms may come back
Because HBC doesn’t do anything to heal our symptoms, it is likely that pre-HBC issues such as acne, PMS, or ovarian cysts will come back.
This is why I recommend addressing these issues at the root. This encourages the body towards symptomless cycles without hormonal birth control.
3. You may experience a boost in libido
A common symptom of HBC is low-libido, so don’t be shocked if your libido skyrockets after HBC!
4. You may notice more stuff in your underwear
As your natural hormonal fluctuations kick back on, you may notice an increase in cervical fluid production! This is normal!
Abnormal symptoms to look out for may include:
Go to a doc ASAP if you notice any abnormal symptoms.
5. You may experience temporary hair loss ~3 months post-HBC
Our hair doesn’t necessarily reflect hormone changes for about 3 months. So, it takes some time for this symptom to flare up.
Again, if we prep the body before coming off and work on hormone support this may not happen!
Most forms of HBC work by shutting down ovulation (except for the hormonal IUD), and this causes a big disconnect between the brain and the ovaries.🧠💭
If you picture ovulation and our cycle is controlled by a switchboard and a bunch of buttons and levers – when we add HBC to the system all of the switches, levers, and buttons are turned to the off position.
When we come off of HBC, everything is still “off” so one of two things will typically happen – it takes a whiiiiile for the body to get the memo that its time to start having a natural cycle OR it “shocks” the system and we go into overdrive, producing too many hormones. Aaaand that’s usually why we get those wild symptoms!
The #1 Secret to coming off of hormonal birth control successfully… plan that shit out👏
I work with a lot of clients who have already ditched HBC and they find me because they’re dealing with symptoms of post-birth control syndrome
And of course, we can address what’s happening and right the ship, but it takes time as any healing process does
And if your goal is to come off of HBC and shoot for a seamless transition, then my top tip is to plan ahead
Ideally, I want to prep the body for 1-3 months prior to coming off and then support it for 3-6 months after.
